Now this? This is what Kestrel loves.

The traveling, the movement of wind on the boat, the way the waves lap and everything’s cold when the spray hits him but hot when the sun shines. And, well, there’s Sara, and he loves her too, at least he’s pretty sure—

But this, this.

This is so withering good.

The coast emerges almost a full day after the boat ride starts; sandy, long, the wind blowing only dryness with the occasional tinge of sea-mist. That’s what lets a few succulents grow, here and there, on rocks. They’ll capture and hoard mist, but other than that, the white sand shines like a whole second sun. Sara gasps at it, but she also covers her eyes, finds herself looking for sunglasses, ‘there’s a shop around here right’—

But Kestrel? He doesn’t care. He doesn’t mind at all.

The brightness can’t hurt him, not now that his body is perfectly beautiful according to his own conceptions.

So he just smiles and wishes the path to the train stop was just a little longer. Wind blows, ripples the very hardiest beach grass—but there’s so little of it here, and even what there is dies down on dryer years.

Thorns and sticks and scorched sun: that’s what Kestrel loves.

There’s mountains to the north, there’s mountains and they look like a smudge against the blue of the sky. Though it’s still not as blue as it’s going to get—it’s brighter at higher elevations, which sea level-dwelling folks never seem to know.

He wants to know when Sara’s going to look up smiling at the deep bright blue sky of the high desert.

And he also wants to know why she’s gotten so determined to follow him here, why she’s skipping classes—but he can’t seem to focus on that thought, because the sand is too bright, the heat hurts his feet too much, and he just feels alive.

The train ride’s going to be another several hours, and it’s the only way to get through those mountains which look so smudgy from here but are downright impassive at closer distances. There’s tunnels involved. Darkness and stone and ever-rising heights, rising right towards the plateau of the desert, rising towards the sky itself.

“You look happy,” Sara comments, and it’s all Kestrel can do to point to the sand, the sparseness,, the openness of this place.

Yé Libelula has nothing on this place… except for Sara, and Mikael, and Aloysius.

But for now, Sara’s here, and they’re going into the train, Kestrel’s making sure to shove Sara right by the window, because she needs to see this. She needs to see the crown jewel of the world, and of Kestrel’s very heart.

They’re moving now, and it’s like rushing through the world, it’s like being wind. And from here, the desert seems even wider, although this is just its tiny southernmost extent. Still, each minute that passes by and shows nothing but sand and sky serves to prove: this place goes on for what could be forever.

Except it’s not forever, because it doesn’t take long for the mountains to start looming closer, Sara’s eyes widening with each minute.
